Review: Couples Retreat

Four couples head to a resort in paradise that includes required couples therapy, in support of one couple's troubles.

Quite funny. Each couple has their own quirks and things get resolved which seems kind of old. But it was still a fun movie. I thought Favreau was hilarious. Vaughn was, well, himself. I loved Malin Ackerman as Vaughn's wife!

Vaughn and Favreau wrote and starred in the movie and Peter Billingsly (aka Ralphie from A Christmas Story) directed. They've all been pals for quite a while.

There are two recent movies, one has been released, one will be in the next couple weeks, that have been made from short films. District 9 was an extension of Alive in Joburg and 9 was of 9. ;) I've embeded both shorts and the trailers for the features below if you would like to check them out. Wow. I have been so bad about updating this. I don't think anyone reads it anyway so no big loss. Let's see...

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen: Long, more of the same, definitely could pick up on the racial undertones, not as funny. Just ok. 3 out of 5 stars.
Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs: More of the same. Cute, enjoyable. Ethan was awake during this so I feel like I missed a lot trying to get him to sleep. 4 out of 5 stars.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: Lots of fun. I hate how they changed the Harry/Ginny relationship. The other changes I didn't mind. Not my favorite, but I think I need to watch it again to make a better opinion. 4 out of 5 stars.
GI Joe Rise of the Cobra: Just ok. Nothing special but it wasn't awful. 3 out of 5 stars.
The Time Traveler's Wife: Good, not as good as the book but a fair representation. The minor characters got left out a lot. I enjoyed this one. 4 out of 5 stars.
District 9: Great Sci Fi. Go see it. 5 out of 5 stars.

Karl Fredrickson (voiced by Ed Asner) ties a bazillion balloons to his house to go on a long put off trip to South America and finds Russell, a Wilderness Explorer, has hitched along for the ride.

Excellent movie...so much more than a kid's movie. It made me bawl... Ah, but still so fun. I didn't see it in 3-D, but it was still awesome to look at. Very fun and cute.

The sequel/prequel to "The Da Vinci Code" finds Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) entangled in another mystery involving the Catholic church.

A fair rendering of Dan Brown's novel. Neat to see the Rome locations, makes me want to travel there. Very dialogue-y, but how else are you going to explain the historical stuff. They also changed a big part of the ending, but I guess it didn't matter too much unless you've read the book.

Review: Terminator Salvation

In a time after "Judgement Day" John Conner (Christian Bale) and the resistance are fighting against Skynet to keep the human race alive.

Another great looking movie! The story was ok. I read on the internet that the original script ending had Skynet winning and everyone dying. Ballsy... I might have liked it better that way, but I bet most people wouldn't. In general, the masses enjoy the "good guy" winning.

I am not sure what the point of having Bryce Dallas Howard in the movie as Kate Conner was. Her part was nothing, too bad really. The Arnold "cameo" was dumb, should have left that out too. I've never seen any of the other 3 movies, just bits and pieces of all of them. I knew enough that I wasn't really lost though, and I could pick out the famous lines they utilized from the other movies.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

Larry (Ben Stiller) discovers the contents of the Museum are being sent to the Smithsonian for storage and resumes his post as night guard to save them.

Fair family fare. :) The story's none to spectacular and Amelia Earhart (Amy Adams), the love interest's, part ends oddly. Her 30's speak is cute, and it's still fun to see the things at the Smithsonian come to life. Darth Vader and Oscar the Grouch appear. What else could you ask for?

Review: Star Trek

The Romulan Nero (Eric Bana) is set on getting revenge on Spock and the newly christened USS Enterprise and her crew are sent to stop him.

Awesome movie! Wonderfully shot, some of the scenes are jaw dropping. A great blend of action, drama, comedy, and enough of a nod to the old series to placate this Trekker/Trekkie. All of the actors did a wonderful job with the characters. It's hard to pick out a favorite!!! I've seen it twice, it's so good!

Review: Xmen Origins: Wolverine

An origin story for Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) from bone claws to adamantium.

It was ok. It lost my attention a couple of times which is saying a lot because I love going to movies. The story was interesting. The action seemed like stuff I had seen before. The tie ins were alright. I enjoyed the casting. (Two people from Lost were in it! ;) I HATED THE FAT SUIT. UGH. WHY??? On the whole, it was meh. I'd probably watch it again though, mildly entertaining.

Two Tom Movies

Review: Four Christmases

Brad (Vince Vaughn) and Kate (Reese Witherspoon) reluctantly have four Christmases with each of their divorced parents.

Fun, silly comedy. Nothing too serious here. In fact, the whole climax at the end was kind of anti-climatic. It felt slightly unbelievable and very rushed. But really it wasn't about the end, it was about all the crazy stuff that happened getting there. Great supporting cast including Kristen Chenoweth, Jon Favreau, Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, Mary Steenburgen, and Jon Voight.

Review: Quantum of Solace

James Bond (Daniel Craig) delves deeper into Mr. White's secret organization in search for answers to Vesper's betrayal.

Lots of action in this one. I love Danial Craig as James Bond. Casino Royale was definately better, but this one was still fun. It was also a lot shorter at 1 hour and 45 minutes. I did find it odd that they made such a big deal about Gemma Arterton being a Bond girl and her part was relatively small compared to Olga Kurylenko's part who I didn't hear as much about. But of course she probably didn't have 6 fingers on each hand. Creepy...

Star Trek (2009) Pictures

The new cast, from left: Chekov (Anton Yelchin), Kirk (Chris Pine), Scotty (Simon Pegg), Dr. McCoy (Karl Urban), Sulu (John Cho), and Uhura (Zoe Saldana). The one that cracks me up is Dr. McCoy is played by Karl Urban, also known as Eomer son of Eomund from Lord of the Rings. HI-larious. It doesn't even look like him.

Of course, the first picture left out Spock (Zachary Quinto, everyone's favorite Hero to hate, Sylar). He looks a litte emotional in this picture, must be showing off his human side.

The bridge looks a little different from the old school cardboard set.

Review: Wall-e

Wall-e, the last robot left on Earth cleaning up trash, and Eve, a robot sent to discern Earth's livability, embark on a adventure across the galaxy.

This was another hard one to summarize, not that my summaries are ever very good. This was a very cute movie. Very creative, especially since there was very little dialogue. I enjoyed how they combined some live action with the animation. Another knock out for Pixar. I especially loved the short before the movie. Hilarious.

Review:The Dark Knight

Batman (Christian Bale) is winning the fight against the mob in Gotham when a new upredictable villian, The Joker (Heath Ledger), appears.

WOW. This was a great movie. Superhero, action, drama, comedy... Heath was amazing as the Joker. Truely astounding. Oscar potential? Hmm, I don't know. I really can't see the Academy giving him a pothumus Oscar, especially for this film. We'll see though.

This movies had some definate twists and turns. The deaths and non deaths completely suprised me. The story was great, pretty deep for a comic book movie, but I guess that's what we've come to expect from Christopher Nolan's Batman. I hope the next movie can continue and not dive bomb like Spiderman 3. Coincedentally, this movie beat that movie's opening weekend record with $158 mil.

Lost connections: Lost's Richard Alpert (Nestor Carbonell), aka the guy that doesn't age, plays Gotham's Mayor in The Dark Knight.

Review: Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Hellboy (Ron Pearlman) and his band of freaks attempt to save the world from an evil otherworldly prince and his aspirations to control the golden army.

That discription is vague and doesn't do the movie justice but it's really hard to summarize this movie. It was awesome though. Director Guillermo del Toro's vision is exquisite. I enjoyed "Pan's Labyrinth" for it's visual qualities. So I am super excited that he is directing "The Hobbit" and that other LOTR movie. He should do it justice.

This sequel to 2004's Hellboy does an even better job all around I would say. The story makes slightly more sense than the first. Visually, it's much better. The action was pumped up and the story has more weight. Plus, given the extreme oddness of the movie, a superhero called Hellboy and other weird creatures in an otherwise normal world, it's deals with some deep issues but also doesn't take itself too seriously.

I remember going to see the first one in the theater and really I have no idea why. I wasn't quite as crazy into movies then. I knew virtually nothing about it. Maybe I wanted to be rebelious and see a movie called "Hellboy." Then again, maybe Tom wanted to see it. He chooses weird movies. ;)

Review: Hancock

Hancock (Will Smith) is a drunk, unruly superhero that almost everyone despises. After saving PR executive Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), Hancock takes his advice and tries to overhaul his image.

Good summertime movie, with a twist. I think that's what has so many people up in arms, it's not your standard action movie. Shockingly, it has a plot and some drama. I enjoyed it. I tend to like most Will Smith movies though, and from his box office takes, who doesn't really?

Review: Kung Fu Panda

Po (Jack Black) is a huge fan of Kung Fu and the Furious Five. The time has come for the Kung Fu Master Ooway to chose the Dragon Warrior and in what seems like an accident chooses Po.

Cute movie overall, funny, visually awesome looking (wish I could have seen it better), and it had a good message. Fun family fare.

We saw this at a drive in so we could haul junior along. He slept the entire time which was wonderful. But I don't know if it was the movie or just the way the drive in projects but it was a dark movie color wise and really hard to see on the screen sometimes. So I feel like I missed a lot of the cool action visuals. There was a nice bright sweeping shot at the beginning that you don't really see in animation. I guess I will just have to catch it again on dvd.

Unfortunately, my husband fell asleep during it. Take that to mean what you will. But I did enjoy the drive in. Their consessions were reasonably priced and they showed Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons before the show. I was mad that it said the movie would start at approx. 8:30 and then didn't start until after 9. Can you be a little closer please?

Great book. The sequel "The People of Sparks" is good as well. The third book in the series, "The Prophet of Yonwood" was actually a prequel and didn't really fit into the series too well in my opinion.

Bill Murray, Tim Robbins, and Martin Landau star in the film, as well as, Mackenzie Crook, the one-eyed pirate in "Pirates of the Carribean" and Liz Smith, who plays Laticia Cropley in the "Vicar of Dibley!"

Review: Indiana Jones and the Kingdon of the Crystal Skull

Everyone's favorite whip weilding archeologist is back after 19 years in an all new adventure.

A fun, fun, fun movie. Not as great as Raiders or Last Crusade, but still good Indiana Jones. It's hard to write any sort of review without spoiling everything in the plot, so I won't even try.

Harrison Ford slips easily back into the role. Shia LaBouf's Mutt Williams is a neat sidekick. Sadly, Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood is totally underused and Cate Blanchett's russian accent is quite laughable.

The hero in this story is my mom who watched my two week old for three hours so I could go out and see this movie. YEAH!!!

Review: Iron Man

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) builds a super suit while prisoner in Afghanistan. Once he escapes, he perfects his design back home to become Iron Man.

This was a great movie. Action, humor, drama, romantic tension. Downey Jr. is perfect as the bad boy Stark, very dry wit. Gweneth Paltrow is charming. Jeff Bridges is kind of odd in his character.

I admit to knowing nothing about the comic book series which is probably a good thing for this movie. Iron Man is not the most popular character but his movie franchise is in excellent hands. Director Jon Favreau did an amazing job and even gets a cameo in as one of Stark's bodyguards. The next installment is due out in 2010, only two years, pretty ambitious.

In those three months, I only saw two movies and they were both mediocre at best, Jumper and Fool's Gold. Movie pickins were rather slim those months.

Jumper was cool visually, the rest just ok. The plot was kind of confusing.

Fool's Gold was enjoyable because I saw it with two of my friends and I like Matthew McConaughy and Kate Hudson. The story behind the treasure was super confusing to me and the rest of the plot was so-so.

I would say these are ok to rent but probably not worth my money to see it in the theater.

3 out of 5 stars to both.

John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) is living in Northern Thailand when he is hired to transport missionaires to war-torn Burma. After the villiage they are aiding is attacked, he returns hired mercenaries to the same location, tags along, and does his thing.

Bleck, what an awful violent movie with barely any plot. I will say Tom enjoyed it and I have never seen the first three. So maybe my opinion doesn't matter, but anyway... I tried to convince Tom to let me see Juno while he saw this, but no dice.

None really, although seeing this movie allowed me to find out that my crappy movie theater put in those nifty digital projectors in all their theaters, yay!

Heath Ledger dies at 28

This shocked me so much that I actually cried when I heard about it. Now, that could just be pregnancy hormones and such, but still, I couldn't believe it. I had a huge poster of him up on my wall through out college. I loved him in A Knight's Tale and even more so when I found out he was the guy in 10 Things I hate about you. I've seen 6 of his 15 released movies and plan on seeing A Dark Knight, his last finished film.

Review: 27 Dresses

Jane (Katherine Heigl) likes to please everyone, loves weddings and has a secret love for her boss. Imagine the problems that arise when her helpless sister gets quickly engaged to her boss.

I loved, loved, loved this RomCom*!!! I told Tom I wanted to see it again in the theater. I don't think I can get him to see it twice though. ;)

Nothing spectacular here, just hilarious and cute. I think I was just really in the mood for that type of film so I am probably overplugging it, but oh well.

Review: Cloverfield

Mysterious monster attacks New York City the night 5 New Yorkers are attending a going away party and film their experiences.

I was so pumped about seeing this movie ever since the crazy trailer in front of Transformers. For me, it did not disappoint. I have read very conflicting reviews of people who loved it and people who hated it. I loved it. It was unique with its camera work, marketing, and story, but still very traditional in the monster movie sense.

I was sad when my plans changed and I had to see it at our crappy local theater. However, I was slightly placated when they showed at the beginning that it was being projected with a new digital movie projector and surround sound. (Wow, I thought the 17 commercials and trailers at the front of the film looked remarkably crisp). (Yay, for the awesome Star Trek teaser, more on that later).

I knew going into it, as most people should have, that it was all done with hand held cameras, a la Blair Witch Project. So we sat more towards the back than the front. I had no problems with the shaky camera. It also wasn't too too scary for me. I only remember wanting to look away once. It also shocked the crap out of me at a couple points, which I loved.

I know the people behind us hated the ending as did some others I've seen online, but I thought the ending was very appropriate given the entire story arc. Oh, and it's a monster movie, people die during the movie, ok, didn't you see that coming??? Crazy complainers.

I know J.J. Abrams only produced the movie, but is was another reason I wanted to see it. I suppose I am just interested in anything his name is attached to. Plus, check this out. A scene from the very beginning of the film, I think, anyone recognize the symbol in the corner?

That's right, a Dharma logo, CRAZY easter eggs. I love it!

Review: National Treasure: Book of Secrets

Benjamin Gates (Nicolas Cage) is back on the hunt for proof that his ancestor was not involved in the plot to assassinate President Lincoln which of course leads to... Treasure!

Pretty much more of the same here. So since I greatly enjoyed the first one, I also enjoyed the second one. I think the critics bashed it because it was more of the same, but isn't that really what fans are looking for in a sequel?

Robert Neville (Will Smith) is the last human survivor in New York of a worldwide plague.

I greatly enjoyed this story. It was a bit more scary than I thought it was going to be, but I still enjoyed it. It did move slowly in some places but I mean it is mostly just Will Smith by himself.

Review: Enchanted

Giselle (Amy Adams), bride-to-be of Prince Edward (James Marsden), is tricked into a magic well by Queen Narissa (Susan Saradon) which sends her from the animated kingdom of Andalasia to real world New York City. Thankfully, she recieved help navigating the real world by divorce laywer Robert (Patrick Dempsey).

Cute, fun, fantasy. Very light-hearted with lots of Disney references thrown it. Not quite a fractured fairy tale but quite funny with enough humor for the grown-ups too. Amy Adams is wonderful as Giselle. The mixture of classic animation and live action is fun. Plus, it's hilarious to see Cyclops as the kind hearted but slow prince.

Review: Becoming Jane

A young Jane Austen (Anne Hathaway) is attempting to do the unthinkable, marry for love.

This was the most heart-wrenching movie I have ever seen. I mean it was good but wow. Be aware that they took some very fictional liberties with the story only having a few letters to go on. Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy who played her love interest, Tom LeFroy, were both excellent. The story also wove in parts of her books. There were only a couple I could pick out being a fan of Jane Austen in movie version only. I believe I read Northanger Abby in High School but I could tell you absolutely nothing about the story.

Review: Stardust

Tristan (Charlie Cox) tracks down a star (Claire Daines) to take back to his true love.

Please go see this movie. I had such a good time with this one. I won't say it was absolutely perfect because it did have flaws. The cinematography has it's ups and downs. The story kind of drags at the beginning. Yet, it is such a fun fantasy adventure with multiple story lines, tongue-in-cheek humor, random story deviations, many different kinds of villains... Michelle Pfeiffer is excellent as the evil witch, Lamia.

I haven't ever told you to go see a particular movie before, but this one is so unique. It didn't make much money (by Hollywood standards) in its first weekend. Perhaps that is why they keep giving us crap sequels, Rush Hour 3, Daddy Day Camp. Seriously, support the unique ones.

Excellent three-quel. Probably the only third movie this summer (and there's been a ton) that really lives up to expectations. Fast paced, action packed. Classic Bourne really.

Review: The Simpsons Movie

The Simpson's tackle the environment, the government, religion, pretty much everything in their first feature length film.

This movie was basically an extended Simpson's episode, but that really works for it. It was hilarious, irreverent, satirical, everything you come to expect from the Simpson's. The animation had much greater detail than the TV version, but everything else was essentially the same. The jokes were great, stuff only the Simpson's could get away with. The lesson from this movie is that you should always listen to you wife. Here, here. ;)

Review: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Very few in the wizarding world believe that Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) witnessed Lord Voldemort's (Ralph Fiennes) return, but the secret Order of the Phoenix is gathering forces to fight. Meanwhile, Hogwarts is being controlled by the Ministry of Magic through the deliciously evil Delores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton).

Excellent movie, although it was torture having to wait 5 whole days after it came out to see it. The acting is really fabulous in this one, especially Imelda Staunton, Gary Oldman as Sirius Black, and Evanna Lynch as Luna Lovegood. My only complaint is that they cut sooo much out. I mean it's the longest book of the series, yet this was the shortest movie yet. It made for a very choppy plot and several characters were severely under-used, like Professor McGonagall and Trelawney. I think Ginny Weasley had two lines. However, they did get some nice reaction shots from her setting up for the next film. Plus, they cut out St. Mungo's which I really wanted to see. Alas, it was still a great movie.

But it does have a bunch of good people in it, Vince Vaughn, Paul Giamatti, Kevin Spacey, Miranda Richardson, Kathy Bates, Rachel Weisz, Elizabeth Banks, PLUS Trevor Peacock, whom you've probably never heard of but plays Jim Trott in The Vicar of Dibley, best British show ever, no, no, no, no, no, no,...YES. You can briefly see him in the trailer as Fred and Santa's dad. This is by the same people who did The Wedding Crashers, so we'll see.

Wow, man, just this one trailer is almost worth it to go to see Transformers. It's a totally unique marketing idea. It has no name. It's all filmed with hand held cameras. It super creepy. Think Lost people. I have tried to find the trailer again online and everywhere I have seen that it has been posted, it is now unavailable. Even more creepy. Rather than me blathering on. Check out this article. It says everything I would have, much better than I would have, and includes a link to a teaser website. J.J. Abrams rules. Geesh, Lost, Star Trek XI, and now this. He is crazy talented.

Review: Transformers

The Autobots come to protect the humans from the Decepticons as they both race to find the All Spark, the energy that created their world, now hidden on Earth.

I enjoyed myself immensely at this movie and that's what it's all about, entertainment. The whole alien robot thing did get a little cheesy at some points, but overall the story was good. Shia LeBeouf, who played Sam Witwicky, talked exactly like Justin Long in Live Free or Die Hard, hence, I loved it. Their characters both talk so fast, that they stumble and mumble over their words. It's hilarious.

The dialog overall was excellent. Sam uses the line, "more than meets the eye," the classic Transformers line, on his love interest Mikaela. Cracks me up. There is a great scene where Sgt. Lennox (Josh Duhemel) is trying to make a phone call to the pentagon while fighting the Decepticons and has to go though one of those annoying, "I don't really want to help you," operators. Great. Plus, the dialog with his parents is just so painfully funny. (They even get a few bonus scenes in the end credits).

Good special effects, great action, comedy. Good summer blockbuster.

Review: Live Free or Die Hard

John McClane (Bruce Willis) is charged with ferrying Matt Ferrell (Justin Long) to the FBI and finds himself trying to stop a cyber-terrorism plot.

This movie was far better than my expectations. The action was quite unbelievable. Plus, how many times really can McClane get the crap kicked out of him and still keep going? Yet, the plot was interesting. The comedy was fantastic. Plus, it starred Justin Long whom I've loved ever since his days in Ed.

The scenes with Kevin Smith as "Warlock" were hilarious. Any humor that involves Star Wars is the best. Warlock: "Boba Fett, are you a fan of the Fett?" McClane: "No, I'm more of a Star Wars fan." Kills me. Plus, Tuvok from Star Trek: Voyager, actor Tim Russ, makes a random appearace. I never see anyone from that show in anything else.

In the scene where Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum are being chased out of the alien mothership, Jeff says "Must go faster, must go faster." In the film Jurassic Park, when Jeff is injured, riding in the back of a jeep, and getting chased by the T-Rex, he says exactly the same line; same emphasis, same tone, same everything.

In the scene at the start (look carefully) just before Will notices the alien ship, all of his neighbors are packing up and leaving. There is a mailman delivering the mail to one of the neighbors. Always delivering, come rain, shine, or aliens.

The little boy who plays Dylan co-starred with Will once before. He played Will's youngest cousin, Nicky, on the television show, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

There are several references to other science fiction movies in ID4. When Jeff Goldblum turns on his computer, the computer's voice says 'Good Morning Dave' which is a reference to the film 2001.

The humans are out of missiles in the final battle, except for Randy Quaid, who crashes into the alien main weapon, destroying the ship. A number of problems here. First off, a central control center operator reports all the missiles have been fired, indicating they can monitor all planes. But somehow Quaid's missile escaped their notice. Then no one in the control room seems to know where Quaid came from, which they should know if they were monitoring the fighters. Actually these mistakes stem from the original ending, which involved Quaid arriving to the battle in his biplane with a missile strapped to it, because he was too drunk to be given a fighter. He then flew the biplane into the alien ship because he obviously couldn't fire the missile. But producers felt this was too cheesy and filmed Quaid in a fighter, but chose not to film the control center scenes again.

When the First Lady is hopping in the helicopter to fly out of L.A. , another helicopter is nearby. It flies past a building that has a large IBM logo on it. People are standing on the top of the building, giving the impression that it is one of the first buildings to blow up. Remember that the movie was sponsored by Apple.

The reason for the introduction of the 'biomechanical exosuits' was that actually two alien designs were presented to Emmerich, but since he liked both, the more monstrous design was used for the suits.

Review: Ratatouille

A rat named Remy (voice by Patton Oswald) dreams of becoming a chef and gets a chance to realize that dream with the help of Linguini (voiced by Lou Romano).

Pixar is unbelievable. I loved it. It was a great story, funny, had great animation, the food looked amazing... All that said, some of it could be lost to little ones. There was a lot going on, but I am sure they would enjoy it none the less.

I love the process Pixar goes through to make their movies. If you get a chance, watch their video podcasts on their website. They're great. In fact, because Pixar uses voices from within at different stages of the process, two of the characters in Ratatouille work at Pixar, Linguini and Emile (Remy's brother). The director just fell in love with their voices to the character. How awesome.

Evan Baxter (Steve Carell) is newly elected to congress when he asks God (Morgan Freeman) to change the world and God responds by commanding him to build an ark.

Great comedy with lots of laughs, neat message. Wanda Sykes who plays his secretary has some wonderful one liners. A lot of critics have bashed it, it's a comedy people I am not looking for some life defining message from it. Geesh. I think even God would get a chuckle from it. He created humor.

Allison (Kathrine Heigl) and Ben (Seth Rogen) hook up for one night only to find out 8 weeks later that they're pregnant.

A hilariously written movie. The dialogue is fabulous. It's awkward and real sounding, plus the stuff they say is just so bizarrely funny. The movie does have a lot of nudity, language, and drug use, which I always find slightly jarring and think, "Did they really need all that?" But maybe I am just not a part of that culture. Besides one of the funniest scenes was when Ben and Pete (Paul Rudd), who is Allison's brother-in-law, are in Vegas and they take mushrooms. Paul Rudd is so freaking funny in that scene. Wonderful.

Danny (George Clooney), Rusty (Brad Pitt), and the gang are all back (minus the girls) to seek revenge for Willy Bank (Al Pacino) cutting out Ruben (Elliot Gould) from his hotel.

This third installment is even better than the 2nd one, back on par with the first movie. It's back in Vegas. Andy Garcia is back as Terry Benedict and helping out our theives. Even, Bruiser, the guy who fake beats up Danny in the first movie is back. Lots of great humor, caper stunts, they even poke fun at Brad Pitt at the end a little. A couple other suprise people show up, but I won't ruin it. Wonderfully shot. Just a great film.

Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

All the gang's back to save Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) from Davy Jones' (Bill Nighy's) Locker and fight Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) for control of the sea.

Brilliant third installment to the Pirates trilogy. The action and special effects are over the top and wonderful. The story is perhaps not as good as the first two but still excellent. There are some very bizarre moments with Jack in Davy Jones' locker that reappear throughout the movie and don't quite fit in. However, Elizabeth kicks butt as always, which is refreshing and wonderful. The two bumbling British officers from the very first movie and went missing in the second are back and brilliant. Plus, Keith Richards makes his appearance as Jack's dad. The love story...well...I won't comment so I won't ruin it. Overall, I greatly enjoyed the film with all its action, humor, love story, and its throwbacks to the first two. Top notch.

Also, if you stay until the very last credit rolls, there is a special scene at the end that is "perhaps" where the story might go if they make another movie. Who really knows what that means? But it's worth the "Ten Years" of waiting through the credits to watch.

Shrek (Mike Myers) finds himself next in line to the throne after King Herold (John Cleese) croaks. He sets off to find the next heir, Arthur (Justin Timberlake) while Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) throws a coup de tat and imprisons a pregnant Fiona (Cameron Diaz).

Fun, fun, fun. Ok, maybe the story wasn't quite as good as the first two, but this third installment was still hilarious. So many funny moments, don't worry I won't ruin it. Also, the visuals were great, steps ahead of the previous animation. I mean you could see the fibers of Shrek's shirt blowing in the wind. It was crazy!
Great movie for lots of laughs.

I admit it. I played Transformers with my brother growing up. However, I didn't remember their names. Optimus Prime seems familiar, but that could just be with the movie coming. Autobot is apparently in the picture. I was a little skeptical of this movie, but I will try to give it the benefit of the doubt. It's a Michael Bay film, King of Blowing Stuff Up, which I tend to enjoy. I really liked his recent film The Island. Plus, I love the picture I posted. Giving props to the 80's, obviously to the Transformers, and, of course, My Little Pony. I totally had a pink My Little Pony, the only one I owned. Yet, Kyle had loads of transformers... darn, spoiled little brothers.

Review: Spiderman 3

Spiderman (Tobey Maguire) battles 3 villains, New Goblin (James Franco), Sandman (Thomas Hayden Church), and Venom (Topher Grace), and romances two women, Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst) and Gwen Stacey (Bryce Dallas Howard), in this third installment to the series.

Well, I think my summary says it all. There were A LOT of storylines in this movie and a lot of flashing back to the other two movies, that seemed unnecessary. However, it was still a very fun, enjoyable movie to watch. The special effects and action were great. I loved the characters and their development. There were some cringe-worthy sappy moments. (I am not sure about that whole dance sequence). Yet, lots of laughs, especially at the expense of the editor of the Daily Bugle, J Jonah Jameson (J K Simmons). (Another of my random connections: I actually know someone who's related to the actor J K Simmons). Well worth seeing if you're a fan of the first two.

There have been lots of rumors about a forth installment and while they wrapped things up, they certainly left room for another movie. However, if director Sam Raimi doesn't come back, I highly doubt that will happen with the current cast.

Husband finally decides that maybe it would be ok to see 300. So, last night we went to the cheap theater in town to watch it. I am sad to say that I almost enjoy the cheap theater experience more that the regular theater, but that's just first impressions. Anyway, one family brought their 4 or 5 year old. I don't think I could do that. The movie is extremely bloody and scary and there's nudity. I mean you get to watch someone being decapitated in slow motion for crying out loud. What 5 year old would enjoy that? Talk about emotional scarring.

Review: Blades of Glory

Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder) team up to compete in pairs figure skating after being banned from the men's division.

Ah, I was ready for a good laugh after my first week at my new job and this movie didn't disappoint. Will Ferrell movies are just so stupidly funny and I was really in the mood for that. Consequently, I loved it. The physical comedy, the one liners, all the cameos. There were at least six professional figure skaters that made a cameo: Scott Hamiton, Nancy Kerrigan, Peggy Fleming, Brian Boitano, Sasha Cohen...and I can't remember the other one.

Great fun if your in the mood for a good laugh and don't mind getting slightly grossed out.

It's still four months away and I am already giddy with excitement. I read an early review from a screening in Chicago so I am prepared for what they left out. The only part of the book that I wish could have been in the movie is when they go to St. Mungo's Hospital. Oh, well, I guess Kenneth Branagh didn't want to reprise his role as Professor Lockhart. ;)

Bob Lee Swagger (Mark Wahlberg) is a former sniper framed for an assassination attempt on the President.

I survived this movie after spending 13.5 hours moving. Suffice it to say I was rather tired but went anyway because I drag my husband to all sorts of movies. The only good thing I have to say about it was that the explosions were cool. Danny Glover as a bad guy didn't work for me. I kept thinking about Angels in the Outfield. So, yeah, the explosions were cool.

300 Spartans led by King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) battle with the massive Persian army. Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel.

Visually stunning, great soundtrack, lots of decapitations. Would have been fine with less nudity, but, whatever, it's not my movie. I enjoyed how the story not only focused on the battle but also the fight back home by the Queen to have the Spartan council send more troops.

Is it bizarre that I wanted to see this movie but my husband did not? I mean it's a "guy" movie with war and blood, etc. I went and saw it with my brother so I wasn't some freak girl who went alone. ;)

Maybe Baby (2001)

I just watched this movie. It is British and wasn't widely released in the U.S. I enjoyed it though. A comedy about infertility, hard to pull off. Great British actors though, Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson, Matthew MacFayden, Tom Hollander, Dawn French (I love the Vicar), Jennifer Saunders, etc. Three actors in this movie are in Pride and Prejudice, my all time favorite romantic movie.

I think what really set it off for me though was Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) playing the gynecologist. Wow.

Fanboys (August 2007): Four extreme "Star Wars" fans and childhood friends from the Midwest drive across America to Skywalker Ranch in order to sneak a peak at the yet unreleased "Episode 1: Phantom Menace" as one last hoorah for their dying friend. Along the way they run afoul at a Star Trek convention and have it out with the Trekkies.

OK, can this movie be anything but perfect? ;) Score, I just found the trailer as I was writing this. I seriously cried during it, because it's funny not because it's sad. Well, maybe it's a little sad.

Review: Children of Men

In a bleak future where humans are infertile, Theo (Clive Owen) finds hope in a pregnant girl as he tries to lead her safely to The Human Project, an almost mythical gathering of scientists trying to solve the mystery of humans' inability to reproduce.

A stunning, albeit dark and twisted view of the future by Alfonso Cuaron. The awesome performances, intriguing story, and wonderful cinematography make this a great movie. The scenery and dialogue add to the dark grittiness. I am always a fan of movies set in the future. Even movies that seem slightly awkward and staggering.

My favorite parts of the movie:

Bryce Dallas Howard as Gwen Stacy in Spiderman 3. Isn't she cute? She dies in the comic book so don't hold your breath. Three villains, two girls, one crazy suit. What will Spiderman do? ;)
